Insurance for Trailer Tents and Folding Camper Insurance

Trailer tent insurance and folding camper insurance may be provided under our touring caravan insurance policy underwritten by NIG. Folding campers and trailer tents are provided with coverage under the description of "touring caravan" but, because of their inherent lack of physical security, we cannot provide cover for valuables, personal items or AV equipment, including cameras on this policy.

We strongly suggest that you ensure that your personal items and valuables etc are covered under you household contents policy as "personal possessions away from the home". Some home contents policies provide this as part of their standard cover, others as an extra. Check that the cover provided under this is sufficient for your needs. In particular check that the types of things that you want to have covered are and that they are covered in the places that you intend to spend time in. Also ask them to confirm that you are covered for theft etc whilst camping. You may also have some cover for possessions which are locked in the boot of your car, on your motor insurance policy but this is probably not sufficient to cover you for the things that you take away with you for a longer holiday. Check with your car insurer.

The description of "touring caravan" on the NIG policy is:
"The Caravan and the fixtures, fittings (including awnings and external steps), furniture, furnishings, bedding, household linen and utensils in or attached thereto."

This covers your trailer tent or folding camper and almost all of the essential equipment, crockery, household linen, gas bottles and similar camping equipment, that you will carry with you.

Sensible Security: A hitch lock or wheel clamp must be used whenever the trailer is detached from the towing vehicle and left unattended. This is a clear and sensible requirement that is relatively easy to comply with. Whilst the trailer is still attached to your car there is no need to fit any security, but we would recomend that you do. This is a minimum and most of our clients in fact use both wheel lock and hitch lock.

Note: Damage caused by mildew and vermin is specifically excluded on this policy you therefore need to make sure you take steps to avoid possible losses by careful drying and preparation for storage. If you have to pack your trailer tent up wet you will need to make arrangements for it to be dried to avoid long term damage for which you would not be able to claim.

A summary cover of the policy is available here caravan insurance policy summary. Please remember, when reading this, that clothes, personal items and audio and visual equipment cannot be added to your coverage cover.
